Whanganui man Antony de Malmanche, 62, is behind bars at Bali’s notorious Kerobokan prison where he is serving a 15 year sentence for drug-smuggling.
He has recently been declined parole in Bali because the New Zealand government declined to make an agreement with the Indonesian authorities about de Malmanche’s return.
An MFAT spokesperson has confirmed that de Malmanche’s matter has not been raised by New Zealand in recent engagements with Indonesia.
This stands in contrast to the efforts made by the Australian government to secure the return of the Bali Nine.
Director of LawAid International, Craig Tuck, is discussing with MFAT the possibility of a prisoner transfer.
Tuck has an office in Bali and has been a regular visitor to Hotel K for many years - where he sees De Malmanche and other international prisoners.
He reported that he has seen De Malmanche “fade away”.
“Tony’s main focus now is on daily survival amidst a raft of complicating physical and mental health issues”.
Thoughts of going home were keeping him alive, Tuck said.
“He dreams of returning to Whanganui and going fishing.”
